Super Naruto: Clash of Ninja! 4
Release Date December, 2020
Platform GameCube

Super Naruto: Clash of Ninja! 4 (SCON4), alternatively known as Super Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen! 4 (SGNT4) or simply "Super", is a fan-modified version of Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen! 4 (GNT4) for the Nintendo GameCube. SCON4 features numerous balance changes, added mechanics, custom animations for new moves, English text translations, new stages, and quality of life improvements as compared to the original game. SCON4 began life as GNT4 Remix and Remastered before being renamed to SCON4 in December, 2020 at the time of its version 1.0 release. The initial developers for Super included TheCape, Sifo, GunBlaze, and Kitesage. The mod saw a boom of popularity following the 1.0 release after being featured by popular content creators. After the 1.0 release, Zen, LilyHV, Athkore, and Virtue, among others, have contributed to the mod's continued development.

Gameplay

The playable cast in SCON4 remains the same as in the Vanilla game.[1] The main design direction for character balance in SCON4 is to create a varied, balanced environment by improving and diversifying the tools of the weaker characters while also introducing a small number of nerfs to oppressive strategies in the base game. Changes to mid and low tiers range from more subtle improvements of their Vanilla design (see: Mizuki, Jiraiya and Neji) to more thorough re-works (see: Ino, Zabuza and Anko). Most unsubbable infinites were removed from the game, as were Neji, Awakened Hinata, and Tsunade's freeze glitches. Notable nerfs to GNT4 top tiers include Itachi's jump A attack (more vulnerable frames and less launch), Haku needles (number of needles cut in half), the removal of Kankuro's puppet throw and the reduction of OTK's health bar. The current consensus is that while there is still a defined top tier in SCON4, several of which are the same as in GNT4, the entire cast is now viable competitively.

You can find short descriptions of character playstyles in SCON4 here.

While the addition of new characters remains a theoretical possibility there are no immediate plans to do so as several programming breakthroughs are still needed before new characters in SCON4 are possible. Several stages have been added to SCON4: Silent Shrine and Tenchi Bridge (imported from Rev3), Aquarium and Asian Gate (imported from Bloody Roar: Extreme) and custom stage Uchiha Hideout.

Many universal and quality-of-life changes have been implemented in the mod as well. Wake up kick (WUK) has been added as a mechanic which can protect players from unblockable supers after being knocked down. The notoriously slow backflip has been replaced with quicker, sliding back dashes. Run stop was removed, allowing players to immediately transition into any other action following a run and running sidesteps now track more aggressively towards the opponent, closer to the running sidestep in Revolution 3. Practice mode has been improved including the implementation of a record feature which allows players to lab counterplay to strings or defensive options. A debug menu is also readily accessible to check frame data and coding details as well as use frame-by-frame advance. In addition, all menus relevant to multiplayer and practice modes have been translated to English.

Tier List

The second community tier list was released on January 12th, 2023.

The community tier list for game version 1.5.1

Universal Changes from GNT4

  • Most relevant menus are translated to English
  • The intro logos and cinematic are skipped
  • The game has all characters and stages unlocked by default
  • The game loads with the accepted tournament ruleset in place (3/5 rounds, 90 seconds)
  • Ino has replaced Sakura on the main menu
  • Debug practice mode is available from the main menu in place of Three Man Cell training
  • The character select menu moves faster
  • A random select has been implemented in place of Akamaru
  • Several stages have been replaced with custom stages or stages imported from Bloody Roar: Extreme and Clash of Ninja! Revolution 3
  • The stage select screen has size and shape diagrams
  • Run stop has been removed, allowing any action immediately after ending a run
  • Running sidestep tracks towards the enemy more aggressively
  • The invulnerable frames of sidestep can be thrown
  • The throw break window has been increased two frames for player one and three frames for player 2 and is now 4 frames for both players on air throws and 6 frames on grounded throws
  • X no longer breaks throws
  • Throws can't be broken while the defender has active 4B guard frames or active 4A/2X counters
  • The slow backflip has been replaced with quicker sliding backdashes
  • Stand resets intangibility
  • Jump land, throw miss, more hit states can be grabbed
  • The startups of many jump attacks are vulnerable to air throw, particularly physical attacks
  • Successful air throw is invulnerable
  • Turn around is three frames faster
  • Dash transitions to run on frame 6 (from 8)
  • Overhead throws cannot be subbed for the first ten frames after being thrown
  • Landing face first, small bounce on your back or face, and crumple restores your ability to substitute
  • Air and Ground grab breaks have guard frames that guard against normal and special attacks
  • Jump land doesn't high crush
  • GRKnJs have at a minimum 17 intangible travel frames and will hit on at least frame 29
  • 4A counters are grabbable the entire duration
  • Getup attacks (Wake Up Kick; WUK) added. If holding A or B on frame 15 of a neutral getup, the character will transition to a get up attack. These are fully intangible for four frames and then immune to mids and highs until the hitbox disappears. They are -21 on block
  • The slow down effect at the end of rounds does not occur
  • Training Mode defaults to 2P control, chakra recovery OFF, show inputs OFF
  • CPU record functionality has been added to the Training Mode menu (thank you based Kitesage)
  • Switching characters is disabled in Three Man Cell mode (this is planned to be reverted in a future patch)

Tournament Scene

Thanks in large part due to tournament organizers such as Boocock, Leeshmow and Cyber, SCON4 has enjoyed a robust online and LAN tournament scene since its release. Notably, it was featured at Combo Breaker 2022, CEOtaku 2022 and Combo Breaker 2023 as community events with the Top 4 matches of both tournaments streamed on Twitch to a wide audience. Online tournaments are run through the game's Discord server. Juicy Game Night hosts regular in-person SCON4 tournaments in Orlando, Florida.
SCON4 has been announced as a main event for CEOtaku 2023 in Orlando, Florida, to take place September 22-24th.

Installing SCON4

You must have a disc image (.iso file) of Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen! 4 in order to patch GNT4 into SCON4. Simply download and extract the patcher, Six Patches of Pain, and then drag and drop the GNT4 .iso file on to the patcher app. Alternatively, place the GNT4 .iso file in the same folder as the patcher and run the patcher. This will create a new .iso file for SCON4.
There is also a web browser-based patcher
Because SCON4 is a patched fan mod with no physical disc, it is played via Dolphin Emulator and on modded Nintendo Wii consoles.
